John Adams

This is the closing quote from the HBO miniseries John Adams, and it does a wonderful job of summing up the entire movie. It is a seven part miniseries based on the book of the same title by David McCullough, which I haven't had a chance to read yet but hope to enjoy soon. Paul Giamatti plays John Adams, and Laura Linney does an amazing job as his wife Abigail. Most Revolutionary war movies tend to focus on the battles, but this mini-series showed much of the history that gets forgotten. The many complicated causes of the war, the struggle of the different citizens to decide whether or not to join a revolution, and the costs to the founding father's and their families when they decided to travel and struggle to form a new nation. The movie tries hard to be historically accurate and shows the personality struggles between many of the signers of the declaration and the personal costs to everyone involved. The only slow section was in part six, the story was dark and the episode seemed to drag on a little too long, but still worth wading through for the rest of the story. After being reminded of the cost at which our liberty was purchased at, it makes you better appreciate the gift we have been freely given.
